Who's Looking Hot for the Copa America 2024?

While the best national teams in Europe battle it out in Germany, there is another major international tournament going on in the United States. The Copa America was founded over 100 years ago and is the oldest live continental competition still running.

For the second time in eight years, the tournament will be played in America and will continue to reflect the change made on its hundredth anniversary in 2016 by including 16 teams. Although the competition originally decided the champions from South America, six teams are now invited from CONCACAF, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football as well as the ten from CONMEBOL which is the governing body of South America.

Current World champions Argentina remain the big favorites. A bet online for La Albiceleste is reminiscent of one other recent scenario. If the 2021 Copa holders can claim the 2024 edition, it will be just as impressive as Spain's collection of two European Championships and a World Cup between 2008-2012.

Manager Lionel Scaloni has certainly got this team ticking and they are on a remarkable run of just two losses in 56 matches, most recently beating Ecuador in a friendly warm-up. Julian Álvarez will be relatively fresh and firing after an in-and out season with Manchester City while Ángel Di María is always a man for the big stage, a stage he exits afterwards. World Cup penalty shoot-out hero Emiliano Martinez fills the goal and is a vital cog for the continued resilience and backbone of the team.

Lionel Messi thinks it's going to be tough. In an interview with Infobae, he said: "Today, South American teams are very strong. Uruguay is doing well, as are Colombia and Ecuador. Playing all the matches is very challenging, but I think this Copa América will be highly competitive."

Neighbors Brazil have nine titles to their name – six behind their closest rivals – and their FIFA ranking is only fifth after a very difficult period of three defeats in a row which was only arrested by a win at Wembley.

Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo will be fresh from their club's recent Champions League success against Borussia Dortmund so the loss of Neymar is not too painful. There is also great excitement over teenage prodigy Endrick who scored the winner against England as well as notching a goal in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Spain and getting a last-minute winner in the friendly with Mexico in June.

One of the biggest challenges for the Selecao in their group will be Colombia who are unbeaten in their last 22 matches. In that time, Los Cafeteros have beaten the likes of Spain, Brazil, Germany and Japan. Less than a fortnight before the tournament, they also hammered the hosts 5-1 in Maryland. Nestor Lorenzo's team are on a hot streak which they will hope can take them to a second title.

James Rodriguez's legacy is already secure but the Sao Paulo man might have one more big tournament in him while Liverpool fans will be keen to see Luis Diaz continue his late run of good form at Anfield.

As for the hosts, the USNMT were very transparent about the nature of their latest huge defeat. Goalkeeper Matt Turner was busy beating the ground in frustration but later said: "I'm going to apologize to the fans. That's not what we're about. And, yeah, we need to bounce back in a big way."

Coach Gregg Berhalter is under scrutiny for the World Cup in two years' time and insisted that the U.S. could beat “big teams”. Under the present coach, they have only won one of their seven outings against South American opposition. Star player Christian Pulisic grabbed the equaliser in their more impressive 1-1 draw with Brazil.

One of the dark horses for the competition are Uruguay, currently coached by Marcelo Bielsa. The former Leeds United manager brought a refreshing blend of work ethic and flair to the Premier League before the flame was extinguished. However, The Sky Blue squad possesses the kind of high intensity, aggression, stamina and technical ability that can be nurtured. Upfront they look strong with Darwin Nunez released from his Liverpool ups and downs, firing a hat-trick in the recent friendly against Mexico.

Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur and Madrid's Federico Valverde are the kind of mid twentysomething central midfielders who can carry out the plan to maintain the thrust that recent victories over Brazil and Argentina have given. Uruguay also have history in this tournament with 15 titles, the same number as favourites Argentina.

As fate would have it, the finals of the European Championships and Copa America are being played within hours of each other. By mid-July, we will know which teams from different parts of the world are in prime shape for the World Cup.
